At a time when hip-hop beats, filtered vocals and drum
loops pass for rock-n-roll, the shit-kicking, bad boy boogie of Austin's
Broken
Teeth allows Bon Scott to resume his restful slumber.
Playing their first-ever gig last Saturday (Sept. 25, 1999) at Babe's
on Austin's
Sixth Street, Broken Teeth's balls-out guitar rock offered renewed hope
to the
wayward rock souls still mourning the loss of Rhino Bucket, Rose Tattoo
and
Circus of Power.
Comprised of vocalist Jason McMaster (Dangerous Toys), guitarist Paul
Lidel
(Toys/Dirty Looks), guitarist Jared Tuten (ex-Pariah), bassist Mike
Watson
(Toys) and drummer Bruce Rivers (20lb. Buzz), Broken Teeth played a
punchy, 10-song set that oozed greasy barre chords, blues-based leads
and
enough primal rhythm to increase the city's population.
From the hot-and-bothered "Stick it in" and "2 Time Lover" to
the
hammering
"She's Gonna Blow" and "El Diablo," Broken Teeth proudly upheld the
maxim that "nice boys don't play rock-n-roll". Despite the boiling
testosterone,
there was room for humor as evidenced by "Pull the Plug," (a clever
send-up
of glam rockers), and the pre-song banter to "The Undertaker." It was
also
apparent that while it may have been boys night out, the bump-n-grind
sleaziness of it all inspired some welcomed dirty dancing from the
ladies.
Decked out in leathers and T-shirt, McMaster reclaimed all of his
swaggering
cock-rock glory without coming across as pretentious or novel. His
bloozy
screech was in fine form, the band was wired like a bomb and the
congratulatory onstage smiles sneaked between sneers validated what
Broken
Teeth has known all along -- that the celebration of skirt-chasing,
drinking and
fighting will never lose favor with the denim and leather brigade. Let
there be
rock!
